Mounds View, Minnesota, is named after the numerous Native American burial mounds found in the area. These mounds were constructed by the Dakota people over centuries and served as burial sites for their ancestors.

In the 1800s, Mounds View was a rural farming community. The arrival of the railroad in 1878 led to the growth of the town, which became a hub for agricultural products.

Mounds View is home to the Mounds View Observatory, which is one of the largest public observatories in the Midwest. The observatory offers a variety of programs and events for people of all ages, including stargazing, lectures, and workshops.
