Twisters Movie 2024

I grew up fascinated by weather. I started storm chasing in 1995 as a junior in high school. The next year, 1996, the blockbuster movie Twister came out starring the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. At the time, nothing like it had been seen. The graphics, story line and attempt to be scientifically accurate were all huge draws for weather geeks like us. I mean, how many times before have you heard Lifted Index or CAPE said in a hollywood movie?

Twister was one of the most successful 'disaster' movies of all time, grossing more than $494 million worldwide on a budget of only $92 million. It was also the first movie ever released on DVD in the United States.

Now, some 27 years later, there are rumors of a reboot to the original, called 'Twisters'. This looks like it will be a 'Twisters 2' sequel to the 1996 classic, and is expected to hit the big screen in the summer of 2024! For all of us weather fanatics out there, I wanted to put together a page with all the latest rumors and gossip that we will keep updated as new information comes in.

Rumors

  • March 22, 2023: DigitalSpy reports that Daisy Edgar-Jones has been cast as a lead role in Twisters. You may recognize her from the recent movie 'Where the Crawdads Sing'. According to EmpireOnline the new movie could focus on the daughter of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's characters from the original movie, growing up to be a meteorologist and picking up where her parents left off.

Her character, who may be 'Kate'?, would be the daughter of Helen Hunt's character Jo Harding. Kate is working a desk job at the National Weather Service after she survived a tornado 10 years ago and hasn't chased since. But of course she somehow gets sucked back in. Pun intended.

  • It is unknown if Helen Hunt [won't] would make an apparence in the sequel. But it is said that she tried to get a more diversed sequel off the ground ahead of the 2021 25th year anniversay of the movie, to no avail. Her version, of which she would have directed, would have featured all black and brown actors, according to People. Perhaps her interest in the project would lead to an appearance?

On April 9th, Fanbolt reported that Helen Hunt was listed on the production listing, which suggests she will be a part of the film! But wait, this is not for sure yet... Movie Hole reports that she will NOT be in the film. THR also reports that they are not bringing back old characters and that this would be a new chapter, rather than a sequel. Hrm. To be determined I guess. We're leaning toward a cameo but not much more.

  • Helen Hunt
  • April 11, 2023: Movie Hole reports that Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell is set to be the male lead in Twisters. And how can you not trust a source called movie hole?
